IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME*

Sculpting global minds, shaping tomorrow’s world

Empowering the next generation through inquiry, diversity and action.

GRADES 1-5

The PYP is a framework within the International Baccalaureate (IB) for teaching that is heavily student centered. This framework takes advantage of a child’s natural curiosity to drive further inquiry both inside and outside the classroom. The learning that takes place in the PYP is transdisciplinary; students will engage with real-world challenges from a variety of perspectives, creating a well-rounded and accessible learning experience.

The PYP framework places the child at the centre of the learning experience. During class, students work together with their peers and teachers to build upon their own prior understandings. With the help of the entire school community, they co-construct a new understanding of the world they live in.

ADDITIONAL COURSE DETAILS

TRANSDISCIPLINARY LEARNING SUMMARY

Learning that takes place within the unit of inquiry is transdisciplinary. Transdisciplinary learning happens when students examine central ideas and concepts from various disciplines. By broadening student perspectives on global issues, the PYP framework aims to equip students with the skills necessary to be successful in today’s complex and challenging world. There are six transdisciplinary themes in the PYP: Who We Are, Where We Are in Space and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organise Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet.

PROGRAMME OF INQUIRY

The Programme of Inquiry is the framework the primary school uses to examine each unit of inquiry. The Programme of Inquiry is divided into six transdisciplinary themes. Each theme is covered once per grade level. Students, parents, and educators can refer to the Programme of Inquiry to understand how their learning journey will progress from kindergarten through grade 5 as they examine the different themes within the framework.
